Tour of Condie’s Candies

Condie's Chocolates

I was lucky enough to get a tour of Condie’s Candies this last week. This small chocolate shop has been open for almost a century. Originally established in 1924, Condie’s is now run by the fourth generation of family, staying true to the original recipes created way back when. Including hand dipping and decorating each individual chocolate:

One of Condie’s more well known items is their Pecan Roll, which consists of a vanilla caramel fudge type candy called penuche, dipped in hot buttery caramel and then rolled in fresh whole pecans. Once this is allowed to set you can slice off pieces of the candy to share with the whole family. We brought one home to share at the office and I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into, the sweet and salty flavors of the penuche goes together so well with the creamy caramel and crunchy pecans, I probably had more “samples” than I needed ;)

Here are some photos of the caramel being prepared along with hand rolling the candies in fresh pecans.

While Condie’s has been open since 1924, they faced almost certain tragedy in the early 90’s when a fire struck the building. Almost everything was destroyed by fire or smoke damage, and though the flames licked the edges of the original hand-written recipes, they did not destroy the foundation of this family business. Being able to hold and photograph the recipes that have been kept in the family for generations meant a lot to me. Thank you, Condie’s, for letting me in on a little bit of your history.

Condie’s will be open this holiday season through December, Monday through Friday 9am to 6:30pm and is located at 1479 South Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. They are only open to the public for certain holidays, otherwise you can order their candies through their website at www.condiescandies.com. Don’t forget to try the Pecan Roll! I would also highly recommend the creme brulee creme (sliced open in the first picture for ooey goodness) and of course the ever popular orange cream with dark chocolate.
